DNA is made from two spirals winding round each other with special links between them.
It's a bit like a twisted ladder.

The DNA recipes for proteins are in the links
between the two spirals.

Each link is made of two bases.
The bases are labeled A, C, G and T.

A base and its part of the spiral is called a nucleotide.

Bases form base pairs, A-T, C-G, G-C and T-A.
These are the "rungs" of the "ladder".

A string of bases that makes a protein
is called a protein-coding gene.
